Robert Werthwein, director of the Office of Behavioral Health released the following statement regarding 988, the three-digit number to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Colorado is planning for the national launch of 988 on July 16, 2022.
To prepare the state for the national 988 launch, a new 10-digit dialing change took effect on Sunday for Coloradans with 719 and 970 area codes. The new dialing procedure prevents those whose phone numbers begin with 988 from accidentally dialing the new three-digit number to the Lifeline and ensures calls can be placed correctly. To complete local calls, Coloradans will need to dial both the area code and the telephone number from here on.
“We are excited that the nation will soon have a three-digit number to call for mental health, substance use or emotional crisis help, information and referrals and are working hard to make sure our systems are ready for the 988 launch next July. During the transition, all Coloradans concerned about themselves or a loved one should continue to contact Colorado Crisis Services to receive free, confidential and professional support by calling 1-844-493-TALK (8255) or texting TALK to 38255.”
If you or someone you know is in crisis or needs help dealing with one, call the Colorado Crisis Services toll-free number 1-844-493-TALK (8255) or text TALK to 38255 for free, confidential, 24/7 counseling support.
