OPINION: A Note from Colorado Representative Jason Crow

One year ago, this country was bracing itself for the Senate impeachment trial against Donald Trump. I was chosen to defend our democracy and serve as an impeachment manager, which was as big of a responsibility as it was a great honor. It was my job to lay out the facts and defend our democracy against Donald Trump’s corruption.

This week, I’ve thought about that time and what would be different if my colleagues in the House and Senate had the courage to hold Trump accountable a year ago. In the past few years, there have been clear warning signs that many have ignored, over and over.

I didn’t come to Congress to impeach the president, but my oath to uphold the Constitution requires action. It’s critical Donald Trump is held accountable for his continued corruption, lies, and danger to the American people. This can never happen again.

This is such an important moment for our democracy. The rule of law cannot bend or break because of one person or political party. Leadership is hard, and I hope that enough Senators will finally understand what is at stake.

We knew a year ago that Donald Trump and his enablers were dangerous, and he must be held accountable. As we go forward with impeachment, I will continue standing up for our democracy and Constitution. I hope you will stand with me.

Jason Crow represents the 6th District of Colorado in the US House of Representatives.
