LETTER: In Defense of Rep. Jeff Hurd

I noticed a full-page advertisement in the Durango Herald on March 5, bashing Congressman Jeff Hurd. It was paid for by the radical environmental groups, the Wilderness Society and the Colorado Wilderness Project.

In the ad they reference HR 471 saying that it cuts the public out of national forest decisions. Actually, HR 471 establishes requirements for managing forests on federal land, including requirements concerning reducing wildfire threats, expediting the review of certain forest management projects, and implementing forest management projects and other activities. Sounds pretty good to me. Thank you, Congressman Hurd for supporting this bill.

The environmental activists also criticize Hurd’s support of HR 521 which blocks Presidents from unilaterally creating National Monuments. I think it is not good for a President to designate a National Monument without some kind of approval and oversight from Congress. Again, thank you Congressman Hurd for your common sense in representing Coloradans 3rd Congressional District.

The radicals also criticize Hurd’s support for HR1206 which would set up a Commission that will review federal agencies that perform similar or related functions to promote efficiency and consolidation.

Thank you, Congressman Hurd. You are a breath of fresh air in Washington DC. Pay no attention to the radicals who really have few ties to Western Colorado.
