LETTER: My Very First Welfare Check

Politics. They have finally found my attention.

A world full of people who choose to live in fear, and an inviting attempt offered to join the madness.

It’s supposed to show up in the mail in the next two weeks. An insult to anyone who works for a living and fights their way through life without asking for anything from the government. One thousand two hundred dollars.

Our waitress. A pretty little thing who’s been serving us drinks and food for the last two hours. We enjoy her smile and joke and flirt with her. She works with a mild sarcastic humor that is contagious and adds so much to our evening.

She tells us she’s been laid off.

Just ten minutes earlier, the governor of Colorado had announced the shutdown of every restaurant and bar in the state for at least thirty days.

While I have chosen not to die from the flu, some will. And to purposely shut down an entire economy is evil and politically motivated. And has fooled the best of them.

We, who were once fearless, have to ask ourselves. Do you want to die while you’re living? Or while you’re hiding?

My very first welfare check is coming in the mail. An arrogant invite to join the club that suckles at the political breast. I want to refuse it, but I know others who could use the money. I’m not sure which way I’ll go?
