I never expected to find good Cajun food up here in the mountains, but then the Lost Cajun restaurant opened in Pagosa Springs. It’s on Main Street, to the right of the antique store in the Montoya’s building.
This is actually a small chain with several locations in Colorado and a couple other states. I wouldn’t be surprised if it went nation-wide one day.
The food is authentic and could hold its own with the restaurants in N’Awlins … 4 kinds of Gumbo, Crawfish Etouffee, seafood plates, Po-Boy sandwiches, and fried catfish, shrimp, & oysters. Plus the usual Cajun sides. And don’t forget the beignets, Louisiana chicory coffee, and Dixie beers. Everything I’ve tried has been great, although once they could have taken the hush puppies out of the deep fryer a minute sooner. (I’ll give them a break, it was really busy that day.) Prices are a dollar higher than I expected, but hey — you get what you pay for, and the portions are decent. Check out their menu.
Seating is casual, with 8 or 10 sturdy wooden tables along the walls and front windows, plus a long counter with stools in the center. Beer and cheap wine available.
The Lost Cajun is also a handy spot if you’re already downtown, shopping or at the Hot Springs. The small tables at the front windows are great for people watching.
