Tequila’s Mexican restaurant is downtown, overlooking the river in Pagosa Springs, CO.
Open 11 am to 10 pm daily

If you’re from California or Arizona, you might prefer Ramon’s in the City Market shopping center west of town.  And Chavolo’s has the most authentic Mexico-style food.

But Tequila’s has Texas-style Mexican cuisine, with a lot of meats and seafood.  One menu page is the beef & chicken dinners, such as the fajitas, carnitas, and their thin-but-well-seasoned Mexican steaks.  Another page is seafood specials, which frankly are not up to the same standard (but what can you expect in a mountain town?)  Try the Fajitas or the Carne Asada Tampiquena.  My favorite is the Carne Asada y Mas (carne asada plus your choice of enchilada, burrito, or chalupa).  Prices in the $10-$12 range.  Here’s their menu.

In my ongoing quest for the perfect margarita, the ones at Tequila scored high.  They have 2 or 3 sizes, and the large ones take two hands to lift.  And you won’t need to spend your money on ”top shelf” here, but if you do want to splurge, they offer many premium tequilas.

The patio out back has this outstanding view of the rapids of the San Juan River just a few yards below.  You probably won’t find this at your Mexican restaurants back home.  Directly across the river are the Hot Springs pools.

Colorful interior, good food, snappy service.  And open till 10 p.m., which is an hour later than normal small towns like this.
