Chavolo’s Taqueria is located at 301 N. Pagosa Blvd., Pagosa Springs, CO.
Open 7 am – 9 pm daily
Chavolo’s calls itself a “taqueria”, but it is a casual, full-menu restaurant that reminded me of the little neighborhood restaurants that you find in Mexico. It’s in a small strip retail center two blocks north of Hwy. 160 – plain on the front, but the interior is comfortable and food is good.
They have everything from traditional tacos to fajitas, carnes to shrimp, and about 15 combination dinners. The tacos ($7.25 for a pair served on soft corn tortillas) come with rice and beans, so you won’t go hungry. A guy might order 2 (4 tacos total) for $9.50. When you get your tacos, be sure to hit the Salsa bar for a variety of hot sauces, chopped onions, cilantro, and jumbo peppers. It’s enough to make you break a sweat. The Tacos Barbacoa (marinated shredded beef) are outstanding. And you can even get Menudo for your Sunday morning hangover. Serious Mexican food.
Margaritas are huge and are some of the best in town. Mexican beer is $3.75; domestic is $3.00. Service is friendly. It didn’t take me long to like this place.
The food is just slightly different and more authentic than the gringo Mexican food that we usually find. Owner Edward Ortiz comes from Mexico, and he will take you back there with the food, music, and ambiance. Open for breakfast, too. ¡Buen provecho! – good appetite.
