Overall, the best restaurant (and most expensive) in Pagosa Springs. Owners Kellie & Todd Stevens really know what they’re doing. Located in an historic 100 year-old home. The Alley House menu is upscale and very creative — they call it “Global/Colorado/Fusion”. Entrees in the $18-$40 range. They also have half a dozen pizzas, but the entrees are the stars of the show.
The menu evolves, but their Thai Caesar Salad has remained, and is maybe the best salad I’ve ever had. The Shrimp & Andouille Skewer appetizer ($12) is also outstanding. The Beef filet is another perennial favorite, and the last time I visited I tried the Sumac Seared Scallops on Sweet Corn & Pea Risotto with Pancetta Crisps ($29). The Herb-Crusted Colorado Rack of Lamb is another popular dish (also $29).
It’s not large, but the interior is open, kind of mountain contemporary. Suitably dim with well-placed lighting.
The cocktail shakers at the bar stay busy. There’s also a nice wine list, from moderate to higher priced. 24 wines by the glass the last time I was there, which is ambitious in a town the size of Pagosa. Most wines by the glass are in the $8-$15 range. Bottles are more reasonable.
If you ask, they do believe that the house has some ghosts or spirits. But personally, the only spirits I have seen were in my very large, very cold, very well-priced martinis.
Reservations suggested, especially on weekends, during the busier seasons, or if you have more than 4 in your party. Open only for dinner. Dining on the deck when the weather is warm…
The Alley House … highly recommended. Bring your best credit card.
