Annual ‘Winterfest’ Activities Begin Tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 3

Pagosa’s annual Winterfest celebration takes place this weekend! It may be a little warmer than usual, but the fun won’t stop! Come out and enjoy all the activities going on around town.

Beginning at 8am on Saturday, watch twenty colorful hot air balloons fill the sky over the San Juan river downtown. (On Sunday at 8am, these same beautiful balloons will launch from the Pagosa Lakes area, uptown.)
For those of you wanting a more hands on experience come help the balloonist get off the ground as a crew member. Potential crew can meet at 7:30am at the pilot breakfast to be matched up with balloonists who need assistance. Saturday’s pilot breakfast will be held at the Visitor Center on Hot Springs Boulevard; on Sunday it will be at Choke Cherry Tree.

Also on Saturday morning, you can head out to Fall Creek Road where the Pagosa Nordic Club is hosting a BB Gun Biathlon with Red Ryder BB guns. No shooting experience needed. Great for all ages! The event is a freestyle ski event in which participants can either classic X-C ski or Skate Ski. You may sign up for the citizens 6K course or the competitive 16K course. The KidK will be determined based on the kids that enter. (They love this race.)

Registration and check in for the Biathlon takes place from 8am-8:45am. Race starts promptly at 9am.

Get out your creativity and join the Lost Cajun for the 3rd Annual Barkus Parade in downtown Pagosa Springs. Beginning at Town Park at 11am, bring your costumed pet and parade with us. Make a donation to the Humane Society, and get a free cup of gumbo. All proceeds go directly to the Humane Society.

The next event will be the Pagosa Mountain Sports Bike Demo and crepe/coffee breakfast. The event will be in Yamaguchi Park at 11am, hosted by Pagosa Mountain Sports with all proceeds to benefit Dust 2. Registration is only $10 to demo fatbikes and full suspension bikes (includes a crepe too!). For those of you who want to hang out and support a good cause, enjoy a crepe/coffee breakfast with a suggested donation of $5. This is a fun activity for the whole family!

Saturday’s Winterfest fun continues with the Penguin Plunge! The weather is rather warm for this time of year, but the river is still icy cold. Grab a spot on the river walk to watch those crazy plungers as they jump into The San Juan River. The best place to view this fun event is from the River Walk directly across the river from the Visitor Center. Pre-Registration: 12:0 noon, Plunge at 1:00pm.

The next ride takes place on nearby Reservoir Hill, with the Sledz on Rez Race. Build your sled accordingly to make it down the hill with or without snow. Young Professionals of Pagosa Springs (YPOPS) is hosting Sledz of Rez and registration will begin at 2pm on Reservoir Hill. Races will start at 2:30pm for you spectators.

This event touts home-made or modified store-bought sleds. You may use skis, snowboards and parts of a manufactured sled as part of your sled; however, a manufactured sled cannot be the entire sled. The range of creativity is endless. Prizes will be given for Best of Show, Best Team and of course the Best Crash! Concessions will be available on site. Registration is $10 per sled, day of. This event is fun for spectators and participants alike.

Saturday will come to a close with free ice skating at the Multi-Purpose Pavilion in South Pagosa Park, from 5pm-7pm. The ice is perfect for an evening skate… plus a hot air balloon ‘glow’ around 6pm.

On Sunday morning early, you can watch 20 hot air balloons launch above the Pagosa Lakes, and then stay uptown and enjoy Sunday brunch at Pagosa Brewing starting at 10am with delicious Chicken & Waffle Sliders, Croque Madame, Pub Pancakes or Fruit & Granola Parfait… just to name a few items off the menu. Brunch cocktails start at $2.
