2018 Sled Dog Event Canceled Due to Low Snow Coverage

By Jennifer Martin

Due to the low snow fall this year, what would have been the 8th annual Pagosa Paw Winter Dog Sports Event has been canceled. The event had been scheduled for this weekend, January 20 & 21 at the Toner Ranch.

The Pagosa Paw was started 8 years ago by Jennifer Martin and James Dickoff of the Pagosa Nordic Club. The goal was to provide more winter activities to locals and visitors and we thought a dogsled race would be fun as well as a great spectator event! Back in the 80’s Pagosa Springs used to host a popular sled dog race called the Yukon Jack, so it was good to bring this sport back to Pagosa.

Starting as a small recreational race with Colorado Mountain Mushers, we have grown to become part of a nationally competitive race series with Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club. Mushers race in various races throughout the country accumulating points towards participating in the National competition. Last year, Pagosa Paw Race director Forest Bramwell qualified to participate in the National Event in Canada.

We are sorry to have to cancel this years event, but look forward to continuing with the race again next year.
