DEVIL MOUNTAIN CHRONICLES: The Swan and the Scorpion
Once upon a time there was a beautiful swan gliding on a lake. On the shore was a scorpion that called
out to the swan. She glided over to him but stayed at a safe distance.
“Oh, beautiful lady swan, please let me ride on your back to the other side of the lake,” said the scorpion.
“If I did that,” replied the swan, “you would sting me with your tail!”
“Oh, but I wouldn’t,” said he, “I would never sting such a beautiful creature as you. I swear this on my mother’s grave, so help me God!”
The swan thought about it – and against her better judgment – she agreed to transport the scorpion. The swan went over to the shore and the scorpion carefully made his way up onto her back. She glided gracefully to the other side with her new friend. At the far shore, the scorpion jumped off and promptly stung the swan on her neck. She honked, and cried, “I trusted you and you promised that you would not sting me, but lo, you have! Why have you done this to me?”
The scorpion looked at the beautiful swan and replied, “Forgive me…but it’s my nature.”
‘Nature’ is the inherent tendencies and inborn character of a person.
If it quacks like a duck, if it walks like a duck, most likely . . . it’s a duck. And that applies to our friend the Scorpion; but there are other slithering creatures – including some lowly humans – who hide their stingers until it’s too late. They lull us into a false sense of serenity, assuring us that what they are proclaiming is the whole truth and nothing but the truth – under oath or not. They conceal their racist agenda with far-fetched claims, slanderous accusations, conspiracy theories, white-nationalist politics and easily provable lies. Then they implore: “Believe me!” And many a swan has succumbed to outright demagoguery.
Why do they lie? Because it’s their nature.
Out of the muck, the Pied Piper of Bullshit commandeers the national pulpit and convinces a large
percentage (33%) of the population that He is their champion and savior. Like mindless lemmings, they follow him to the River Styx to be baptized in venomous, un-American propaganda, believing every word as gospel.
It used to be that honesty was a prerequisite for holding public office. Nowadays it seems that the truth is merely an option, to be used only as a tactic. Unfortunately, most people only listen to what they want to hear, not what they need to know.
Hopefully the Scorpion’s followers will finally see the light before he inflicts irreparable damage to our beloved country!
Sorry if I’m pontificating. Forgive me … but it’s my nature.
