VIDEO: Fine Wines & Miniature Horses

If you happen to be browsing the wine section at Plaza Liquor — one of Pagosa’s downtown liquor stores — you might run across a couple of wines produced by Jamieson Ranch Vineyards, positioned on a top rack near the center of the store.

Not just ordinary bottles of wine, perhaps.

Here’s store manager Cathy DeCory, talking about her decision to stock these particular wines. Ms. DeCory typically looks for wines that have been awarded high “points” by this or that wine expert or group… or alternately, for vintners who have attached some special quality to their products:

“One of my vendors came in — it was Chuck, from Baroness — and he brought in these wines and asked if I wanted to taste them… And he mentioned that they donate a portion of their profits to charitable organizations.

“And that they rescue horses, and train them to be therapy horses. So I looked it up on YouTube…

“Sometimes they take these horses to visit with veterans, and children with disabilities — especially, I believe, children with autism.  And so I thought this was a really cute idea.”

Ms. DeCory selected two wines from Jamieson Ranch Vineyards and gave them a top-rack positioning: Whiplash Red (2015, awarded 90 points by Wine Enthusiast) and Double Lariat Cabernet Sauvignon (2015, awarded 91 points by The Tasting Panel).
