Richter Uzur Duo Coming to Community Concert Hall May 2

Consummate performers and accomplished composers who have each played around the globe to critical acclaim, guitarist Brad Richter and cellist Viktor Uzur will take the stage at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College as the Richter Uzur Duo, Tuesday, May 2 at 7:3pm.

Together, Richter and Uzur pair exquisite originals with blazing improvisations and iconic works by composers such as Bartok, Gershwin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Saint-Saens. The duo’s programs combine elements of classical music, rock, Eastern European folk and North American indigenous music – all played with an intuitive sense of vernacular, integrity and charm to produce a sound uniquely their own.

While it is considered unusual for two composers to write music together, the Richter Uzur Duo has found a unified voice, melding two idiosyncratic creative minds into a single bold expression. The pair has composed and arranged the most expansive collection of music for cello and guitar duo in existence.

Richter began teaching himself to play guitar and compose at age 12, and at 19, despite having no formal musical training, was awarded the Presidential Scholarship to the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, and was the first guitarist in the college’s history to win the coveted Thomas Morherr Prize for voice accompaniment. He won the Royal College of Music guitar competition, then completed his Master’s degree and returned to the U.S. to fully launch his concert and teaching careers, which have taken him around the world.

An international performer as a soloist and chamber musician, Uzur received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in cello performance from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. He also holds a PhD. from Michigan State University. He is a prize winner and a diploma recipient at competitions such as the Yugoslavian National Solo Competition, Sarajevo; Jeuness Musicales International Competition, Belgrade; and XI International Competition Tchaikovsky, Moscow.

Richter and Uzur are both outspoken advocates for the arts and arts education, Richter as the executive director of Lead Guitar, a not-for-profit organization that establishes guitar programs in public schools nationwide, and Uzur as professor at Weber State University and director of the Bonneville Chamber Music Festival.

Wrote Guitar International of the Richter Uzur Duo, “Effortless precision and musicality… The interplay between the two is playful yet stunning… One of the most exciting duos on the scene today.”
