Mayor Spearheading 2017 ‘Adopt-a-Bike’ Beautification Program
By Town of Pagosa Springs
Pagosa Springs’ Mayor Don Volger is spearheading a new initiative that will place flowers throughout town, with opportunities for businesses and visitors to get involved.
Adopt-a-Bike Planter Program
Bike Planters will be purchased by the Beautification Committee and distributed at no cost via a lottery system to interested businesses and non-profits. Those that adopt the planters are responsible for planting, maintaining and decorating the bike planters. Beautification awards will be presented throughout the year. Businesses are encouraged to be creative and have fun with the bike planters. The Committee plans to have 20 bikes distributed throughout the community.
Signups for the lottery will be accepted between April 20 and May 5. Winners will be announced during the kick-off event on May 20th. Each bike will include a plaque that indicates who the bike is adopted by. If a business or nonprofit does not have a location to display a bike, the planter will be placed in a public location. Bikes will be available for pick-up on May 26 at the Visitor Center. Bikes must be decorated by June 4.

Bike Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt will be launched in conjunction with the bike program to encourage visitors and locals to discover each bike planter and explore the community. Each bike planter will have a license plate. Letters from the license plates will be used to complete an anagram. Completed scavenger hunts will be returned to the visitor center to spin a prize wheel to win a prize. Prizes on the prize wheel will be a combination of business donations and gifts provided by the Visitor Center. Maps and game instructions will be available throughout town.
Businesses that donate items, gift certificates, etc will drive traffic to their business and contribute to a new community-wide initiative to beautify Pagosa. The prize donations enable businesses that do not have a bike planter to participate. The Bike Scavenger Hunt will launch on June 5.
Downtown Flower Program
The committee will oversee the addition of new flower planters in public spaces in downtown Pagosa Springs – adding 18 (eighteen) – 4′ planters on the pedestrian bridges (4 each) and Hot Springs Blvd. bridge (6). Additionally, the visitor center will add window and railing boxes, hanging baskets and planters around the property. The plantings will be handled by volunteers and ongoing watering and maintenance will be fulfilled with a part time, seasonal staff person.
The Beautification Committee will sponsor a kick-off event and barbeque in Centennial Park, at the Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership site, on Saturday, May 20. The event will begin at 12pm with lunch, followed by volunteer projects and concluding with an after party to celebrate the day’s success. The businesses will be also selected for the Adopt-a-Bike program through a lottery system during the event.
