POEM: Wind Chill

When autumn winds blow cold
And winter’s chill pervades
Farm animals stay in the fold
Where warmer beds are made

They somehow know that spring will come
And with it all the whiteness take
The sun will toward Summer solstice run
And shadows shorten in its wake

Still winter’s frozen winds can
Muster a terrible force
As they move across these hinterlands
And the seasons take their course
